Victory in New England, New York, New Jersey and Indianapolis Healthcare Markets Remains Under Review, According to HealthLeaders-InterStudy
February 2, 2012—Nashville, Tenn. —HealthLeaders-InterStudy, a leading provider of managed care market intelligence, reports that Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs) are being developed in New England, New York City, New Jersey and Indianapolis. As these regions are the focus of the biggest football game of the year, their healthcare systems are on the move toward more accountable care.
In New England: The Patriots are not the only champions in New England. Seven provider groups in the area have been designated as Pioneer ACOs by the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation, according to HealthLeaders-InterStudy.
The Pioneer ACO Model is designed for healthcare organizations and providers that are already experienced in coordinating care for patients across care settings, according to the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation.
“Rewards and risks are more aggressive in the Pioneer ACO track,” said HealthLeaders-InterStudy Analyst Ric Gross. “But the organizations chosen in New England have sophisticated, integrated care systems and are well suited for the program.”
In New York and New Jersey: Health systems have started to lay the ground work toward developing ACOs, according to HealthLeaders-InterStudy.
“Montefiore Health System already has several elements of an ACO, including an integrated system with 21 primary-care clinics,” said HealthLeaders-InterStudy Analyst Deborah White. “North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System’s pilot ACO has started to manage complex diseases among the health system’s employees.”
New Jersey has nine ACOs in the works from a variety of health systems, medical schools and physician groups, according to HealthLeaders-InterStudy.
In Indianapolis: The Super Bowl host is also pursuing ACOs. The city has one provider group identified as a Pioneer ACO. In addition, other healthcare providers have started the process of putting together accountable care options.
“WellPoint Anthem BlueCross/BlueShield is aligning with the region’s healthcare systems to form ACOs in Indiana,” said HealthLeaders-InterStudy Analyst AnnJeanette Colwell. “It will be worth keeping an eye on which provider groups are able to succeed with their current ACO plans.”
